Training for Human Rights Trials

The first training programme for enabling war crimes trials to be held in former Yugoslavia, launched in August, has been successfully completed. Yugoslav judges, prosecutors and defence lawyers have been undertaking training since August to enable them to conduct trials under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). The final session culminated in a mock trial with participants acting out the roles they can expect to play in actual trials in the months ahead. The sessions, jointly organised by the IBA, the Swedish Institute for Legal Development and the Humanitarian Law Centre in Belgrade – and with the full backing and participation of the ICTY – were hailed as hugely successful. The IBA hopes to carry out further training programmes next year. Click here for the press release.
